Fancy free in NYC

There was so much we did on our vacation trip to New York that it will take many posts to cover it all. This was my first trip to New York (except a brief -less than 40 hours- trip a few months ago to see his Omi before she went to be with the Lord) Of course I want to start with my favorite night. The night with no kids! (except baby, but he hardly made a peep) Two nights before we left, my wonderful mother-in-law listened for our kids while we stayed out until 4am running from Manhattan to SoHo. Honestly, we spent most of our time on the subway getting from Long Island to Penn Station to our destinations, but it was an adventure none the less.

waiting for our first subway ride to manhattan

So the first place we headed was to Manhattan to see the place I have been obsessed with since 2001. I have seen the movie Serendipity close to 200 times... really. I love everything about the movie and knew that when I went to NY I would have to go and see the movie's name sake. I knew it so well from the movie that I could spot it from two blocks away based on the street lamp out front.

I was SO excited to be there... even though it was almost midnight.

The staff was so friendly, even though we entered the shop five minutes before closing. I just had to order their famous frozen hot chocolate... mine was mint chocolate and amazing!

FACT: Jackie Kennedy wanted to buy this recipe to serve at a White House function and the owner said no.

I loved the decor... if I could replicate it without being fearful of six kids breaking anything, I so would.

These two photos are the downstairs portion of the shop where we sat.

This is the upstairs

AND this is the table that John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale sat at and said these lines:
Jonathan: This is the ultimate blend to drink. How'd you find this place?
Sara: I first came in because of the name: Serendipity. It's one of my favorite words.
Jonathan: It is? Why?
Sara: It's such a nice sounding word for what it means: a fortunate accident.
Of course I had to take something home, so I bought this awesome platter that I am so in love with.
Just wondering if I should actually use it for serving or decor...

My husband is truly the best for making sure I got to experience this dream :-)

Next we headed down towards SoHo to see a place he wanted to see... a pub called Mcsorley's. Unfortunately we made it there right as they were closing so he didn't get to have a beer there. He's always putting my wants before his... i was really sad we didn't make it in time.

There did end up being a cool little hat store still open next door called Village Scandal, so we wondered in. We bought a couple of hats that we thought were pretty cool.

All in all, I think this might have been one of the best nights ever!
More NY posts to come.

My God is jealous for me

Over the past few weeks... well, if I'm being honest, months... I have been completely and totally overwhelmed. I feel more inadequate than I have ever felt in my life. Being a mom in general allows one the ability to realize all of our failures, but going from a single mother of two to a mom of five, and one on the way, has left me in a state of confusion. What is my main job? Before, I got up, went to work with a laid out agenda, came home, spent time with the my two kids, made dinner, and went to bed. Now, there is no one barking orders at me or laying out my day. My husband could honestly care less if I laid around all day. He understands the stress of being pregnant, and is perfectly happy if everyone is fed. He'll come home from work, kiss me, and jump right in to serving by cleaning the kitchen, throwing a load of laundry in, and helping with dinner. For the first few months of our marriage his serving caused lots of fights. My pridefulness said "I must not be good enough if he feels he HAS to help me". What I have slowly learned is that he WANTS to help because he loves me and does not think my task as house wife and mother is small. I am completely blessed by his heart of service and pray that I grow in that area because of his leadership. Unfortunately, without him handing me a list of chores to do I am left to my own expectations, fueled by facebook pictures of other moms who seemingly keep their houses perfectly clean, spend time doing school with their children, plan out five crafts a day for themselves and children to do, try a new recipe every night, scrapbook, blog, design, eat nothing but health food, with perfectly tame hair and a face full of make-up with their perfectly content demeanors. Needless to say this is NOT me. If I get one room clean I'm doing good, and if I happen to also do a load of laundry and run some errands... even better. As for crafting... the only time is happens is when it's a necessity, like birthday party invites because it's cheaper. So all of this brings me back to my original question... what is my job? And moreso, how does it look in my life?

When I think of the question "what is my job?" of course the first things that come to mind are taking care of my husband and children. A few weeks ago when I started thinking about it, the real answer came to mind. My real "job"  is glorifying God, but how? In the midst of cleaning out closets, with piles of laundry stacked across my living room, I wondered, "glorifying God can't just be THIS". Organizing, feeding, driving, etc. So then my mind went to the next "church answer" - I can glorify God by doing the tasks He has given me, with a joyful heart and gratitude for my boundary lines. Don't get me wrong... this CAN be the right answer... BUT I am the type of person who will take this truth and then try to live it out, then feel guilty because I can't live it out, then walk around in condemnation because "if God never puts more on me than I can bear, then why can't I bear this (at least not well)", which then leads to a bad attitude towards my husband and kids. I needed the HOW. How can I have joy in my season? How can I have gratitude for driving to Cartersville for four hours in one day just to get the older kids to school? How can I be thankful for a pregnancy that is worse than my last two and that makes me feel dumpy? Thankfully God's word says if we seek, then we will find. The Lord has begun revealing to me the answer.

My God is jealous for me. He wants my attention and adoration, and after all, doesn't He deserve it? He wants my focus off of everyone else and what they are doing (which honestly is a lie anyway) - As a side note... no mom has it all together. That's what pictures are for. They capture all of the good and none of the bad, and are great into deceiving others into an ideal. That's what facebook and blogs do so well. Assist in the lies of our inadequacies and everyone elses happiness. - It's not a big revelation to me that God wants us to put Him first, but I struggle most with believing - A. How big God really is, and B. That He really loves me. Between reading Matthew 6 and being convicted that it is not just talking about money, but anything else that we covet and worry about, and reading the book "Crazy Love" by Francis Chan, I have begun to see a change in my heart. Being reminded of just how big God is through the video "the awe factor" found at http://www.crazylovebook.com/ and realizing that God could make the earth stop spinning, gravity cease to exist, and the trees stop producing oxygen, yet doesn't, has changed the way I view my worries. When I think of the God who controls all of that, I can't help but have faith that He is in control of all of the small things I get anxious over. Then when the gospel is brought back into view after the understanding of how big God is, then I can't help but be overwhelmed with gratitude that He CHOOSES to be in every detail of my life. With a lack of anxiety and a heart of gratitude it is much easier to have joy. So for me, the answer to "what is my job?" is simple. Spend time understanding who God really is, and most importantly that He really loves me. When I believe that God REALLY loves me it overflows into my speech and my actions. It's no longer about me doing my tasks to prove to God or man that I really love Him, but understanding that He really loves me and being joyful in doing my tasks because NO MATTER WHAT, whether I sleep all day, or get everything on my to do list done, I AM LOVED by THE CREATOR.

This song has been on repeat this morning as a gentle reminder of this truth.

David Crowder - How He loves

He is jealous for me,
Loves like a hurricane, I am a tree,
Bending beneath the weight of his wind and mercy.
When all of a sudden,
I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory,
And I realise just how beautiful You are,
And how great Your affections are for me.

And oh, how He loves us so,
Oh how He loves us,
How He loves us all

Yeah, He loves us,
Oh! how He loves us,
Oh! how He loves us,
Oh! how He loves.
We are His portion and He is our prize,
Drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes,
If His grace is an ocean, we?re all sinking.
And Heaven meets earth like an unforseen kiss,
And my heart turns violently inside of my chest,
I don?t have time to maintain these regrets,
When I think about, the way?

For my five weeks of Christmas my God gave to me...

a REALLY busy season of life! :-) I'm just going to post all of our Christmas pictures and let them speak for themselves... I'm still trying to recouperate. Below I have pictures of MOST of our holiday festivities, but not included in pictures are four school christmas parties, three book exchanges, two pj/ polar express days, and one full week of craziness!! Seriously, one of the toughest weeks in my life. The teachers should be grateful I was stil able to get their christmas gifts to them :-)

December 26th - Christmas with ALL of the kids

To be honest with you, this is one of the parts about a blended family that stinks. Every holiday doesn't have everyone there. So we did the best we could to celebrate Christmas day and the day after, so it felt like it was all together.

Dylan got scrapbooking stuff. (which went with her "quality time gift" of a girls' day of scrapbooking later in Jan.
The older boys got skateboards (which went with their "quality time gift" of a boys day at the park) Matthias got a remote control car for the same boys day.

I knitted scraves for each kid. The loved them!

Matthias has always been a bit OCD... here is the content of his stocking lai out in order.

God is good ALL the time.

So, the past few days have been eventful and such a time of seeing God's kindness revealed to us. On my husband's way home from work on Wednesday he informs me that he thinks his transmission is going out and that he will be stopping by our mechanic to see what's up. An hour later the diagnosis is in... $1400-$1700... that we DON'T have, I might add. Now I have to start by saying the company my husband works for is AMAZING... and his boss and co-workers are as well. How God uses them in our lives is such a blessing. He let his boss know what was going on and the first thing said is that there is a new guy on the team who use to be a mechanic and they will be glad to pull him off training for him to put a new transmission in... for FREE. So right off God provided the labor. Then my husband went on the search for a transmission. Apparenty there are many junk yards left, and we couldn't trust the craigslist ads. So my hubby sent out an email to everyone he knew and asked for wisdom and prayers. I was so proud and grateful for his humility to do so. The verse that pops in my head, paraphrasing, is "God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble". By thursday morning one of the other guys from work had spoken to a parts guy at one of his lots (Aaron works for an automotive specialist company, who does car interiors, and exteriors for resale car lots) and was able to find us a transmission with 42,000 miles on it and a small parts warranty for $750 after tax and fluids that needed to be purchased!!! So now God has provided the transmission. We still didn't have $750 lying around, but it was a lot less overwhelming than the $1400-$1700 we originally thought we would be paying. God provided above and beyond. He is always such a show off... and I LOVE IT! We had the money gifted to us! So yesterday Aaron, his boss, and the mechanic on the team took the transmission out, waited forever for the new one to arrive, and worked past dinner time to put the new one in for us. We absolutely CANNOT thank you guys enough for your servant's hearts!!

To top it off God showed off yet again. One of the families my husband had originally emailed came to our door with a christmas card. In the card were movie tickets for a date night and a money gift. Of course, I cried. So now, not only is our transmission fixed so Aaron can go to work (since he works out of the truck), but we also get to have a date night, and some money so I can get some christmas presents for the kids. (Secretly, I was more excited about the movie tickets)

I am thankful for God's kindness, knowing that if I got what I deserved I would get a lot... a lot of really horrible stuff, but instead my Father lavishes His kindness on me.

Boy, oh boy... thanksgiving, and such

Yet again I find myself "catching up". Although I am doing better than the last time I tried a blog. Life is just so busy, Ifeel like I hardly have time to sit down. Most of my internet interaction is from my iphone, which I can't blog from (or at least I am not smart enough to figure out how to do so). As most of you know, we found out on November 23rd that we are having a boy.

There was no guessing... it was there for all to see.

Honestly, I thought we were having a girl. I felt is was a girl, had a name picked out for a girl, invisioned a girl. When they said it's a boy I about fainted. Then I preceeded to cry for the next day and a half. Parting with Lorelai's baby clothes, knowing I would not have another daughter to put them on, just did something to me. But by God's grace I've realized it's like most things in life - The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps. (Proverbs 16:9 ESV). I had plans. God has different plans. I threw a two day tantrum. Plain and simple. So now I have growing excitement for our baby boy and all that he will offer our family, knowing he IS God's best for our family. Now to just pick out names... so far we have Asa Jack Coombs (my hubby really likes the name Jack, and I want to let him have it... it just seems really hard to come up with a good name to go with Jack)

Thanksgiving!!!

We had cinnamon rolls, eggs, bacon, and sausage for breakfast.

and yes.. the kids ARE color coded :-)

For Thanksgiving it was just us (which is 7 people) plus hubby's parents, as well as my mom and sister. There was tons of food and leftovers for days.

Sausage, mushroom, and rosemary stuffing, hawaiian roles, and brie and chive biscuits

sweet potato souffle, cauliflour gratin, glazed carrots, garlic mashed potatoes, and green bean casserole.

turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce, butternut squash, half mash (half potato half sweet potato), and cranberry apple pecan stuffing muffins.

serving, like usual

Hubby feels like I avoid being in front of the camera...

That's my love!!!
